Ukraine had stable relations with Russia until they decided they wanted to align with the west and adopt democracy when there was a color revolution in 2014. If they had remained a vassal state of Russia, their relationship would still be stable.

Similarly, the situation in Kazakhstan is stable because they are a vassal state of Russia. Watch what happened when there was the beginning of a color revolution there earlier this year: Russian quickly sent troops to assist the Kazakh government in violently putting it down. If a successful color revolution was to happen in Kazakhstan (unlikely), Russia would be playing the same military games with them that they are now doing with Ukraine.

Ukraine was not a vassal state from 1991 to 2014.

Read the Independence Act of Ukraine from 1991, a referendum was held on that act by the entire population and approved with a clear majority.

The text clearly states that Ukraine should be independent and neutral status, it shall not join any military block.

By 2013-2014 calls for joining EU which has a defensive clause, effectively are calls to cancel the Independence Act of Ukraine.

There most certainly was a German resistance movement during and in the build-up to WW2: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_resistance_to_Nazism gives a good summary.
antocv · 4 years ago
Yeah, as I said - nothing of significance.

Now, we are sitting in our comfortable homes still and this is for us another thought-challenge about horrible events far away. I condemn all wars, but as nerds continue with the thinking and analyzing, this is not meant to defend any side and especially not to justify any war.

Now then, what you said.

Do you also hold that against all the Germans when they started both World War 1, and World War 2? They did nothing. There was no resistance movement within Austria or Germany of any significance to stop their war machines. People where complacent. How did they get away with it? Would you let Russians also get away with it, if they say they are sorry and have changed?

saurik is pretty famous, I would estimate that most serious players in this space know the money is here. What is good about this post and the fact it's on top of HN is that maybe the average HN reader will be curious and help shift the crypto narrative on HN from negativity to at least neutrality.
antocv · 4 years ago
But the negativity is well deserved

Look at how the crypto-sphere reacted at FEDs returning "stolen" coins to Bitfinex like all praise and "justice served". Only HNers actually raised "hey guys why do you even crypto if FEDs will decide who owns what".

It all ends up being Government-coin and they like it.

Shouldn't all true crypto believers hate this news?

It's the government trying to enforce their opinion of who should own those Bitcoins, thereby taking power away from the owner that the network has decided on, which would be "whoever has the cryptographic keys".

"Shouldn't all true crypto believers hate this news?"

I for one am very sad about this news but much more sad about the reaction of "crypto OGs"

Yes, there was a period of time, mostly after the ICO crash, where the market was relatively quiet and most people in the space worked on interesting technological problems. I don't want to get into arguments about the usefulness of blockchains and web3, but the intention of developers was not to scam consumers, at least not explicitly or from the outset. Now the intention of most projects is explicitly to rug pull and scam people, mostly due to the NFT craze.
antocv · 4 years ago
Just cycles repeating. Remember 2013 then it was all kinds of shitcoins when the term shitcoin was most used, happened. Peercoin, FeatherCoin, AmsterdamCoin, TitsAndAssCoin. They all pumped and dumped. Somebody looking into crypto late 2013 would have found 99% scam coins. Same thing in 2017, 99% scam ICOs. Today its 99% NFT and token scams.
