Successfully tracked down the Hyrum's Law one, nice work

finally feels like Python scripts can Just Work™ without a virtualenv scavenger hunt.

Now if only someone could do the same for shell scripts. Packaging, dependency management, and reproducibility in shell land are still stuck in the Stone Ages. Right now it’s still curl | bash and hope for the best, or a README with 12 manual steps and three missing dependencies.

Sure, there’s Nix... if you’ve already transcended time, space, and the Nix manual. Docker? Great, if downloading a Linux distro to run sed sounds reasonable.

There’s got to be a middle ground simple, declarative, and built for humans.

+1 for Mise, it has just totally solved the 1..N problem for us and made it hilariously easy to be more consistent across local dev and workflows

Their status page has updated w/ a GitHub Copilot degraded perf warning. Seems like they're at least aware of it

Yep. Some of it's working fine, but various file downloads are giving 500/503

It’s like when we hit a new month the quota of “talk about Rust” credits is renewed.

Say what you want, Astral ships impressively fast and their stuff works well. Python has been looking for better tooling for a long time.

Fingers crossed this is/becomes extensible. Pyright and MyPy both suffer from lack of extensibility IMO (Pyright doesn't consider the use case and MyPy plugins come across as an afterthought with limited capabilities). There are many things that can be built on the back of type-checked AST.

I’ve had this same thought. Ruff doesn’t support extensions / custom lint rules that I’m aware of, so maybe don’t get your hopes up.

My guess is most people are using Redis via cloud providers. Did any cloud providers switch away from Redis?

AWS supports Valkey for Elasticache, and they actually bill it 33% cheaper. We use it and it works well.

It's worse than that: many textbooks are actually subscription services.

Yes, this is it. You can usually find some discounted or free way to get most books, but I had classes where you literally submitted homework through the same system you accessed the book through, and it was like $150.
