I’d like something like this, but instead of bypassing the paywalls and stealing the articles it’d pay a few cents for each article and charge me at the end of the month.

I really, really want to pay but I really, really don’t want to set up a subscription to read a one-off article.

alex_hitchins · a year ago
I'm sure there was a startup a few years ago trying to achieve this. I can't recall the name sadly, it was 10+ years ago. Agar or something perhaps?

I believe you topped up a balance and if the site supported it could access per-article resouces for a one off fee. For this to really work it needs to be site independant however.

VS has been offering that since at least 2015 version, and improving on it since then.
alex_hitchins · 4 years ago
Indeed, it's come along way and I'm not knocking it.

Point is thought this was there out the box with VB.

For the Web have a look at OutSystems for example, it doesn't come as free beer though.

Debugging in .NET is just as it used to be on VB6, not sure what you would still be missing from those days.

As for breaking the GUI, it wasn't as if frm files were foolproof.

alex_hitchins · 4 years ago
If I recall correctly, you could write new code during debugging sessions, move the pointer to it and run it. Very dynamic. We can now do some of these things in VS or other tools with .Net, however VB was much more powerful in this regard. I can only recall there being one statement that required a rebuild - was it CreateObject or similar?

> "knock up" a quick GUI, hand it over to the dev team, and say "Here you go. Support this."

Isn't a GUI mockup one of the best ways to come up with a consistent set of requirements for software? At least by making the mockup in VB rather than drawing it on paper, it can serve as a start for the actual GUI part of the program.

Thing is it was never a prototype, always the end product. Had a lot of Access systems that were created by people in their roles that got widespread use then grandfathered into general dev support too. These were always horrible but too big to change.

There's a youtube channel by a guy who ran/runs an Apple-affiliate repair shop. He has definitely seen storefronts remain idle for multiple years. I see this happen in my local area as well and don't understand it.

Or no one is getting paid full time. That might be a good thing for a project like this. A full time employee might bring with it some perverse incentives (if it reaches a state where the community isn't clamoring for a full year's worth an an engineer's time, what happens to that engineer when the work is gone, or what if they find things that aren't needed to justify more work?)

If their current balance is over two years worth of their annual budget and the users are happy with the project and how its progressing, I'm happy to think they're in a good place until I hear evidence to convince me otherwise.

Surely this enables them to just keep up, rather than having the freedom to innovate?

AA's 12 Steps use the word God four times. They also refer to "Him" three times, to a higher "Power," a "spiritual awakening," and prayer.

Nearly every step has a reference to spirituality of some kind and most of them are laced with Christian undertones.

More generally the idea behind the 12 steps is to place yourself in the hands of this higher power and allow it to guide you. Basically it requires a belief in prayer.

AA has worked for many many people--which is wonderful and it is demonstrably a great tool for them! But an atheist, humanist, or more generally someone who doesn't believe in spirituality is going to have to go through significant mental gymnastics to deal with the 12 Steps.

It seems to me that if someone doesn't believe in God or a higher power of any kind, there are probably better first line treatments for alcohol addiction. It isn't necessary for an atheist to change their spiritual or religious beliefs in order to recover. Therapy, medication and secular support groups all exist.

I came here to say the same (but undoubtedly not nearly as well as yourself).

It was the religious stuff that put me off completely. Being in a group of people all there with a common cause I felt was quite powerful. Hearing shared experiences from the community was helpful. I just couldn't pretend I was OK with peddling any form of faith.

I know a bank (I forget which, in EU) that asked me for the 3rd and 5th letter to my password when I called them. Their thinkkng was probably that way the customer support on the other end would only see 2 letters of said password.
alex_hitchins · 6 years ago
With my bank, the telephone banking password is very different from the one you use to log in.
