Out of curiosity, do people here still use Dropbox? I've had an account for over a decade, but haven't used it since ~2014; Google Drive and Syncthing have largely replaced it for me.
albatrosstrophy · 16 days ago
Still the best cloud service for me for my Windows. But I'm interested to hear how you set up Drive and Syncthing. Is the UI as familiar to use as the the standard Windows folder?

I have an Amazfit smartwatch that gets charged by a simple USB cable with two pins that magnetically attaches to the back of the watch. When I was on vacation and forgot that cable I was able to make my own by cutting a USB cable and attaching the wires to the contacts of the watch with tape. That simplicity is hard to beat. And this watch is water resistant.

The battery is the single reason why I got the Amazfit. I use as a dumb health tracker and occasional GPS running. It easily lasts 4 weeks on a single charge. That's one less proprietary charging cable to bring on a trip.

As someone who' just counting steps, I'm genuinely curious what's your average steps per day? And how many steps over 10 years?

I noticed on the Arabic example they lost a space after the first letter on the third to last line, can any native speakers confirm? (I only know enough Arabic to ask dumb questions like this, curious to learn more.)

Edit: it looks like they also added a vowel mark not present in the input on the line immediately after.

Edit2: here's a picture of what I'm talking about, the before/after: https://ibb.co/v6xcPMHv

And here I thought after reading the headline: finally a reliable Arabic OCR. I've never in my life found a good that does the job decently especially for a scanned document. Or is there something out there I don't know about?

Will never upgrade to windows 11. It’s a downgrade really..
albatrosstrophy · a year ago
I wouldn't say it's a downgrade, but I had to run Windhawk and other mods just to make sure the start menu doesn't look like a phone's app drawer.

Interesting place, Singapore. On the surface, very clean and orderly. (How?) (In the past few decades, some very popular musicians were not allowed to perform there. Who's doing the micro-managing?)

From Wikipedia's Singapore article:

Ethnic groups (2020)[b]

    74.3% Chinese

    13.5% Malay

    9.0% Indian

    3.2% Others ***

albatrosstrophy · 2 years ago
Interestingly while the minorities have a higher birth rate compared to the majority Chinese, the ethnic breakdown remains the exact same throughout the decades. This is because Singapore's unsaid migration policy is such that the government takes in more immigrants of Chinese ethnicity to make up for the shortfall.

You don't need an app like this.

Just decline any meeting that doesn't have an agenda with a comment of "I don't think I'd bring any value to this meeting."

If the meeting does have an agenda but doesn't have any goal decline it with a comment like "I don't have a strong opinion about the goal here, so I'm happy to accept whatever the outcome is."

If there's an agenda and a goal then attend that one because you don't often get to see a mythical creature.

albatrosstrophy · 2 years ago
This is obvious yet brilliant. I've been working for so long without realising that meetings are a process, not the end. I.e. they have to lead to something.

Too lazy to create an archive link from my phone but this quote has me interested to read the rest.

I would appreciate an archive link though

The thing that’s really going to hurt is when Amazon kills Abebooks.

While I loved the kindle and still own one, I have since moved on an eink android reader with an isolated google account.

Calibre, Overdrive, RSS, Syncthing and obsidian plus a small portable Bluetooth keyboard and I can read and take notes anywhere.

albatrosstrophy · 2 years ago
You seem to be describing an Android tablet with e-ink display. Aside from Remarkable, what else is out there worth buying?
