Tell that to the people that didn't cry for Charlie Kirk and therefore lost their job.

Free speech means that the government doesn't go after you. It doesn't shield you from consequences (which you may or may not agree with) from private parties.

Europe is not a single country
ahoef · 12 days ago
Nobody says it is. I think they mean the EU law frameworks that constituent countries need to implement.

Disclaimer: This comment is not intended to be political - I don't care about the specific party she's part of.

Out of all the people I would trust on the matter, Kamala Harris doesn't certainly end up at the top of my list, for reasons such as this one: https://youtu.be/O2SLyBL2kdM?si=Zq-EN8zxj4Y_UCwI

You also don't need to be in classified meetings to understand that Bluetooth/ BLE (and specifically the way most vendors implement the spec) is not as secure as other more battle-tested technologies

What she says isn't necessary untrue, now is it? She just skips a lot of steps most people have no clue about.

I had files in a cabinet, now they are digital. And most often also on a cloud drive, which is metaphysical in some sense. For most it is indistinguishable from magic.

No HDMI is really sad. This means there are probably closed source drivers. Linux is not mentioned as supported, so I suspect crapware.

Yeah, try explaining “drive C:” to a kid these days, and why it isn’t A: or B: …

Of course software developers are still stuck with 80 column conventions even though we have 16x9 4K displays now… Didn’t that come from punchcards ???

ahoef · 4 months ago
While 80 characters is obviously quite short, my experience is that longer line lengths result in much less readable code. You have to try to be concise on shorter lines, with better phrasing.

Are they in widespread use? They were deprecated in 1995.

I don't see conflict in those statements.

But you’ve gained the ability to do static analyses and quality control, enforce authorisation on who can deploy to the prod server, gained accountability and a history of changes by virtue of having it in the repo, enabled everyone to run the image locally regardless of their local environment…
ahoef · 6 months ago
To be fair, this can all be achieved with other tools, while still rsyncing the Python to prod.

One advantage is being able to run the Docker anywhere with the same build. Two runs of the same build are not always the same, but the Docker image will be.

As someone who doesn't use AI for writing code, why can't you just ask Claude to write up an explanation of each change for code review? Then at least you can look at whether the explanation seems sane.
ahoef · 7 months ago
Claude also doesn't know, because Claude dreamt up changes that didn't work, then "fixed" them, "fixed" them again and in the process left swathes of code that isn't reached.

the video has to be re-encoded because apple quicktime doesn't like the youtube video format. But the audio can just be copied. My mac's fan never spins with the hardware acceleration so it runs in the background and I just forget about it.

I detest QuickTime more than any other piece of software

For untrusted IoT devices I’ve found that sticking them on the IoT VLAN (so no device-to-device communication, and either no or extremely limited internet access; but I let my trusted clients punch through to IoT devices) has allowed me to retain all functionality whilst being confident they’re not up to anything I don’t want or expect.
ahoef · 8 months ago
This is my setup. I find this to be a reasonable balance for comfortable life. Except my printer, that gets no Internet so it cannot update to some crappy firmware that nags about supplies.
