A classical virus, from the good old days. None of this botnet/bitcoin mining in the background nonsense.
aerique · 8 days ago
On the Atari ST we had a boot sector virus that inverted the mouse Y-axis after some random time.

So annoying.

Deepness in the Sky is probably the first Sci Fi alien I read who didn't feel like a human wearing an alien suit.

Fantasy sometimes does this better but usually with specific tropes.

If you liked that and you haven't read it yet, give "Dragon's Egg" by Robert L. Forward a read.

it's based on a proprietary os, which includes halium proprietary blobs.

imho, linux users should focus on phones well supported by postmarketos

aerique · 3 months ago
At least SFOS has been a viable daily driver since 2013, so there's that.

And SFOS can also run natively like on the PinePhone.

Would you like this phone to run your own apps?

If you spend development time on the ecosystem, I could maybe pay your voucher (the 99€ downpayment part), then you can get the hardware on release at the discounted price they offer for backers

Edit: I'll probably miss any replies here. Email me on (rot13) wbyyn99@ytzf.ay. I'm offering this because imo it's important to have an alternative ecosystem to Android, considering the developments in the last year where it's becoming more like iOS. Other developers who are short on funds who read this should also feel free to reach out, though I'm not some super wealthy investor I can see about what I can do

I can also chip in, fully agree with Aachen.

(and I've also made apps for things I'm missing on SFOS (Pushover client, Bluesky client), so Hi5!)

I've been IT operations for years, and when I order laptops I sometimes do a little experiment. If I ask people if they want a 15.6" laptop or a 13" laptop, they always say 15.6. If I don't give them a choice and just start buying 13" laptops, everybody tells me how much they love the smaller laptop, and people still on the 15.6" models start looking around asking when they can get the smaller one.

People don't know what they want unless you give it to them.

My eyes want a 19" laptop these days.

My Android phone prevents me from taking screenshots if an app author doesn't want me to.

My Android phone prevents me from recording phone calls at the request of my carrier, even though it's totally legal for me to do so in my jurisdiction.

I'm not loving where this is all going.

aerique · 6 months ago
That's what I love running Android apps in Sailfish OS. I can just take these screenshots.

Then again, this is also what makes me almost throw my Android phone against the wall when I try to do the same on that phone.

Hah, this is about the ~2010 Google ai contest “planet wars”. I participated in the 2011 iteration, ‘ants’, which was a fun but humbling experience. Anyone else try that? I recall the final winner’s solution was far less elegant than I expected after the code was released, but man was it effective.
aerique · a year ago
The AI Challenges were so cool and I had hoped there would be more of them.

A "humbling experience" is definitely the right choice of words.

I did some minor work on a PoC for the one after Ants. It was multi-player (or: multi-bot) Asteroids but things fizzled out as most of the people organizing moved on to other things.

The ai-contest.com links go to a strange, irrelevant, and suspicious website.
aerique · a year ago
Well, the blog post is 14 years old.

It's an interesting showcase in how we (or at least I) assumed what the lifecycle of hyperlinks would be. (My assumption was they would perhaps 404 at some point, but not this.)

Nice writeup, short so is more approachable than John Koza’s classic book on GP. That said, if GP looks useful to you, eventually read Koza’s book, or at least experiment with his Common Lisp code.

Also don’t confuse Genetic Algorithms (GA) with GP.

aerique · a year ago
There's some minor issues with the blog post though that don't make it entirely correct Genetic Programming as written by Koza's. I'd have to dive into it again but I think it was either with the way mutations are done or how fitness is evaluated.

Anyway, it should be close enough.

Same. I wish there were an alternative (a practical pocket computer), but there really isn't. So I too gave up on fighting my phone, and have also completely stopped doing mobile development. I now treat my phone essentially as an untrusted, prepackaged walled garden with limited utility. :-/

I use Sailfish OS as my daily driver since 2013.
