Hopefully this makes them think twice about I dunno, putting chips into cables.
aalimov_ · 2 months ago
I think you are referring to thunderbolt cables with their signal conditioning chips, and if that’s the case then I would like to say that TSMC isn’t making those chips. Afaik Intel and maybe some others make the chips that go into thunderbolt cables.

Am I the only one who's noticing that this "open chaos" project's most voted PRs are to add structure to the project (e.g., calculate +1/-1, etc.)?

I guess people just desire a certain amount of structure to their chaos :)

aalimov_ commented on PSF has withdrawn $1.5M proposal to US Government grant program   pyfound.blogspot.com/2025... · Posted by u/lumpa

Its not fraud. The grant proposal accurately describes the research occurring, and people evaluating the grant will have no misconception about what they are funding. The problem is that political appointees have been applying dumb keyword searches which block research that has nothing to do with the issues they object to. Like using privilege in the computer security sense. Or bias in the statistical sense, unrelated to political leaning.

Take a look at the comments left by that profile. I don’t think that they would be able to understand what you are saying here, all they see is red.

A partial recent comment “qcnguy” made: “DEI is an immoral, hate based and anti-truth ideology. Requiring the PSF to dump DEI if they want the money is good for everyone, because DEI is bad for people”

Honestly "don't reinvent the wheel" makes absolutely no sense as a saying. We're not still all using wooden discs as wheels, we have invented much better wheels since the neolithic. Why shouldn't we do the same with software?
aalimov_ · 9 months ago
I always took this saying as meaning that we don’t re-invent the concept of the wheel. For example the Boring company and Tesla hoping to reinvent the concept of the bus/train.. (iirc your car goes underground on some tracks and you get to bypass traffic and not worry about steering)

A metal wheel is still just a wheel. A faster package manager is still just a package manager.

What are your experiences of using Kotlin for modern macOS/iOS development? How's the support looking when Apple releases new XCode?
aalimov_ · a year ago
Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) is neat for android devs that want to be able to code for both platforms using a toolset/language they are familiar with, but for iOS development KMP is a hassle (personal opinion). I’d rather just write the code twice. Also, I actually like Xcode. As for Android Studio, up until the more recent versions the GUI felt really clunky to me (which made working in it a bit of a slog).

Cheating in multiplayer games has become such a huge problem, it has destroyed trust across every major FPS.

I am a long time CS player, but I did briefly play one of the new CoD games, before they went crazy with Nicki Minaj skins and bong-guns.

A person was so convinced I was cheating, they started doing OSINT on me while still in a match, and they found my old UnKnOwNcHeAtS account as some kind of proof that I am cheating (that account was 12 years old by that point).

I abhor cheating, and I have a lot of interest in computer science, so of course I wanted to see how all of it works and did my research during my youth, taking care to never compromise the competitive integrity of the games I played, but if you look around, there is not a single game that I can recommend to people anymore.

Games like Escape From Tarkov are so busted, cheaters are stealing the barrels off people's guns and crashing their game/PC on command.

My beloved counter-strike's premier competitive game mode has a global leaderboard that acts as a cheat advertisement section within the game.

Games like Valorant are a cut above the rest on account of their massively invasive anti-cheat, but are nowhere near as clean as most fans claim, I mean, you could write a cheat for the game using nothing but AHK and reading the color of a pixel.

There is a whole industry of private matchmaking for counter-strike, built solely on the back of their anti-cheat and promises of pro-level play to the top players.

EDIT: I found the screenshot, it was MPGH not UnknownCheats, but yeah, they also had a game ban on their account.

EFT also uses kernel level anti-cheat “Easy Anti-Cheat” (as invasive as what valorant uses (vanguard)). Don’t know why ETF implementation sucks.

I’ve been on CS since 1.3, and i think their system is pretty good. Sure you get cheaters sometimes, but it’s not that bad, maybe I’ve been pretty lucky.

I don't want my children to have to learn at the pace of the bottom quintile. Obviously average and less-than-average people exist. But I will _not_ be hamstringing my kids to placate the whims of the state or some "modern" moral standard. I know how harmful it is because I went through it.
aalimov_ · a year ago
Your perspective is valid, but I think its worth reconsidering some of the assumptions youre making. Assuming your child is above average may not always reflect reality. Being above average at a thing does not make you above average at all things. The public education system provides resources like gifted programs, AP courses, and extracurricular activities to challenge / engage students at all levels of above/below average. So if your kid is an advanced learner they can still thrive without being “hamstrung.” I think using terms like “hamstring” dismisses the value public education provides in fostering diversity of experiences, social skills, and engagement with peers.. things that cant be replicated in a homeschooling environment.
