I meet a few college CS candidates, and I really empathize with what they’re facing now.

I feel like the industry is far tougher to get into now than when I joined.

I sent out maybe 10 applications, got a few interviews, and 1 offer.

I hear of kids now sending out dozens to hundreds of applications with few bites.

Makes me sad for the stress they must feel.

_rutinerad · 25 days ago
Last time I was looking, a year or so ago, I sent out dozens of applications and got zero interviews. Last time I switched jobs, in 2022, I sent out the same amount of applications and >50% led to one or more interviews (and eventually two offers).

Apple is a fantastic iterator and polisher. They are not innovators. What was the last apple product that was truly innovative, i.e. something no-one else has done before?
_rutinerad · a month ago
That is not what ”innovate” means, you’re mixing it up with ”invent”. You could argue that they never invented anything, but not that they haven’t had, and continue to have, plenty of innovations the past decades.

Think every product that was one way, then Apple did it differently and suddenly every product on the market looked like theirs. That’s a long list of both hardware and software.

On the other hand, when was the last time any mass market tech product was _invented_ by that definition (something no one else has done before)? Most products are incremental improvements, even innovations are rare when it comes to mass market products.

> I like writing front end code. I'm probably never going to have a job where i need or would even want to write a low level graphics library from scratch. Fine, I'm not red-eyed 3am hacker brained, but I'm passionate and good at what i do.

Keep that spirit! All I want from coworkers is genuine interest and curiosity. Not everyone is going to find investigating Linux’s networking stack interesting, just as not everyone is going to find making beautiful pure CSS animations interesting. I think one of the greatest mistakes the tech industry did was to create “full stack,” as though someone would have interest and skill in frontend, backend, and infra. Bring back specialists; we’re all better for it.

_rutinerad · 3 months ago
I think it’s a fine label. I have skill and interest in all of those areas. Some things requires specialists, most jobs out there don’t.

>hit lock button 5 times so it forces a passcode

I didn’t know what that meant - so I googled it. And it says something entirely different….

Quote: Pressing the lock button (or side button) five times quickly on an iPhone or many Android devices will activate Emergency SOS. This will prompt a countdown and eventually, if not cancelled, initiate a call to emergency services, potentially alerting emergency contacts and sharing your location.

_rutinerad · 4 months ago
I just tried on my iPhone and it does not do that, there is no countdown. It will force a passcode and give you the option to call SOS, shut off your phone or show your medical id.

I usually just add a standard set of numbers and special characters at the end of an otherwise secure password to appease the complexity gods.
_rutinerad · 6 months ago
I used to do that too, capitalizing the first letter and appending 1.

How do you not have the entire house smell like sautéed steak / have oil + fat droplets splatter everywhere on the stove/floor?

_rutinerad · 9 months ago
Use a splatter screen, in addition to an effective kitchen exhaust fan.

Same. There are a lot of apps way, way worse than Spotify, including Apple Music.
_rutinerad · a year ago
I think Apple Music (on iOS, on Mac it’s quite bad) is really good. But even if it wasn’t, I still would use it just for ratings and complex smart playlists.

It did always strike me as somewhat unreasonable that my job trusts me with the ability to spin up an arbitrary number of $100/hour AWS instances, but not with purchasing a $60 mouse.

The bean counters only understand (and measure) one of those well enough to try to control it.
_rutinerad commented on Spotify pays out 70% of its revenue to record labels   twitter.com/carnage4life/... · Posted by u/doener
shampto3 · 2 years ago
I believe this is missing context. From what I understand, Spotify pays big record label companies a lot of money as part of their negotiation for permission to host/stream their music. If they didn't pay these record labels they wouldn't have the music most people want to stream, and so they wouldn't have any power to get customers. They are basically held hostage by the big record label companies if they want to run their business because Spotify doesn't actually own any of the music they stream.

So now let's look at the artists under these record labels. Do they get a cut of the deal that Spotify has with the company? As far as I can tell, they do not. Artists only get paid royalties based on how much their songs are streamed, which is extremely low. They do not get any money from the backdoor deal that Spotify has with their label.

Personally I think artists have the right to be mad at both Spotify and their label.

_rutinerad · 2 years ago
I’m not following. The label is the entity that the artist chose to represent them. The labels do not pass on the money that they make during that representation. Who else should the artists blame, other than themselves for choosing poor representation (from only poor options)?
