This is one of those cases where I am glad I don't have my soundbar connected to the internet...

The bulbs are ok but I tried moving my Hue motion sensors over to my main Zigbee network and they were terrible, constantly dropping offline and needing reset.

Luckily Hue is made by Philips who I'm pretty sure aren't going anywhere.

I moved my Hue sensors to my primary Zigbee network and left the bulbs on the hub, especially since I have some of the gradient strips that don't work unless they are on the Hue hub, and my motion sensors have been rock solid.

With hue there is still potential risk of a lockin with their hue app. They allow it still, because their sales are not really good. But otherwise they might have restricted it.

Hue bulbs currently are stock standard Zigbee compatible light bulbs. You can pay them into ZHA/Z2M without any issues and control them without any Hue hub or app.

If Hue were to suddenly switch to something proprietary their existing bulbs will all continue to function without their app or hub.

Fingerprints? I haven't ever had that happen. Perhaps only certain countries?
X-Istence · a year ago
I am a US resident alien (green card holder) and I have my fingerprints and picture taken each time I enter the United States.

When entering China, they take your fingerprints, iris, and I guess face too... I was there in 2019, at one point I was at an airport, and a screen was bragging, "Stand where the camera can see your face, and we'll tell you which way to your gate.". It worked too, the screen displayed my name, flight number and direction to my gate. And implicitly, "We can identify you wherever you are.".

When entering the United States they also take fingerprints and a picture of your face.

We recently had a developer join our team and he got stuck setting up his dev environment.

We use a .dev domain as a localhost alias, and turns out his ISP’s DNS wouldn’t resolve 127.0.0.1 (or whatever it is) for the .dev domain. Changing his resolver at the network level to 1.1.1.1 fixed it.

I imagine there are lots of difficult support tickets for app devs, and at a certain point they just hardcode the DNS to remove one variable from the equation when debugging bug reports.

Not resolving 127.0.0.1 or RFC1918 addresses or even ULA for IPv6 is done to avoid DNS rebinding attacks. For most end users that is probably the correct move.

With 14 already out for a long time, do many stay on 13 still?
X-Istence · a year ago
There are some people that like the stability of staying in a single branch for a longer period of time. Same as for example people staying on RHEL 8 vs RHEL 9 or Ubuntu 22.04 vs 24.04

Updating to 14 requires a reboot.

Updating to 13.4-RELEASE also requires a reboot.

Stephenson is for me a hit and miss author. I adore The Diamong Age, Anathem, Seveneves. I didn't finish the first book of Baroque Cycle and Cryptonomicon. Some of his other books I don't plan reading since I don't expect them to be good.

I'd say Anathem is his best book overall, but the first 100 or so pages is almost pure world building without much action which might turn people away.

Seveneves is close and is more accessible from the beginning. Just skip the last (after time jump) part of the book which is... unnecessary and bad.

X-Istence · a year ago
Anathem was almost unreadable due to the aforementioned world building but also apparently needing to redefine every single last word in the dictionary.

But Cryptonomicon, Snow Crash and REAMDE were amazing.
