WettowelReactor commented on SMS traffic pumping fraud   support.twilio.com/hc/en-... · Posted by u/badrabbit

Here's the missing bit of advice, which you won't get, because Twilio makes money from you sending SMS messages:

Do not use SMS for 2FA.

Seriously — just don't. It is not secure, it is susceptible to fraud, it is not a good second factor.

Yes, I do realize there are other uses for SMS, but this is the prevalent one, and I'd like people to consider seriously if they really want to use it before they blindly follow what others do.

Remember that there are companies that use SMS 2FA not to make anything more secure, but to get your unique tracking identifier (your phone number) and tie it to online targeted advertising.

SMS also comes with no deliverability or latency guarantees, and hard to scale globally as rules and regulations are different in every country. Acquiring IDs is slow and you need multiple for backup routes and different use cases.

I'm skeptical. I've seen too many developers write poorly performing code purely out of indifference. If you gave them more time they'd have a lot more Reddit karma but I'd still be finding N+1 problems in every other code review.

WettowelReactor · 2 years ago
Is it really indifference or are employees responding to incentives? Few places reward code performance. Companies are getting exactly what they pay for and missing a deadline to improve efficiency is irrational under current comp strategies.

Any such topic would benefit greatly from adding the age of the children we talk about, because I feel many people talk about different topics and have misunderstandings because of that.

There is absolutely absolutely zero, nil reason to hit a small children (let’s say, below 8-10?), as they simply won’t understand the consequences and you are just assaulting the poor thing without any benefit. This is simply unforgivable and should be grounds to take away said child from the parents (depending on the degree), or press assault charges to non-parents.

What seems to be more commonly acceptable (and reason for disagreement) is a spank/slap for older children (e.g. teenagers), which is quite common in certain cultures. I’m not sure on the research on that, but it should be qualified because one is imo an absolutely evil view point, while I personally don’t agree with the second, it is at least open to discussion.

By this reasoning there is a magical window where a person is old enough to understand the consequences of their actions yet young enough for it not to be abuse. What happens at 18 to say that corporeal punishment is no longer effective and legal? By that reasoning should corpreal punishment be allowed in the workplace?

I agree with the first point but can you cite some examples for the second. I personally feel they are/should be most developer friendly company considering they are purely engineering driven.

Perhaps things have changed but the old Steve Yegge post speaks directly to developer friendliness: https://steve-yegge.medium.com/dear-google-cloud-your-deprec...

For the past 2 weeks, I've been working from a treadmill. It has been incredible. I got a small under-the-desk treadmill for my standing desk and I walk at about 2.5km/hour and get around 20,000 steps in per day. It has improved my mood, my clarity, and also has improved my sleep (because I'm tired of walking). I also find it easier to focus on tasks for some reason.

If you can make a setup like this work for you, I highly recommend it. Your body will thank you in the long run.

EDIT>> A few of you are asking about the model. I actually bought 2, one for myself and one for my partner, who also loves it.

This one is mine https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V7F8QYK. I got it when it had a $100-off coupon, so the price wasn't as steep. No real complaints so far, except you can't store it upright. I just roll it out of the way when I want to sit.

The one for my partner is https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0895DRWVY. She likes it. It's a little smaller and can be stored upright and out of the way, which is nice. There have been complaints about the remote (and it only comes with 1), but the manufacturer claims to ship new remotes free of charge if yours breaks.

They're both a little quirky with a very simple LCD screen. Supposedly mine has an app integration for step counting, but I just use my phone in my pocket. They both get the job done.

In my experience typing while walking has not been an issue but using a mouse with moderate to high sensitivity can be challenging. Using a gaming feature such as "sniper" mode to toggle mouse sensitivity when precise clicking is necessary solved the problem.

The extra dramatics in this article turn me off.

Its essentially saying I'm busy and negligent. Now I'm mad big company didn't come to my rescue.

> scaling our business from 3 to 10 and then 100 people, raising money, editing our film, and planning our release. Oh, and a virus shut down the world, I moved two times, and our business went completely digital.

> and amid 18 hour workdays,

The quantified communication with company provides no details to what was said.

Maybe op was right, maybe they weren't but this sounds like whining without any evidence.

The line about

> Messages often took a full month to get a response.

Also does not ring true to my experience with AWS unless the author was not paying for any support tier. If they did not have even developer support on the account, then they got exactly what they paid for.

The headline is a lie. They did not try to censor this website. They sent a cease and desist order to someone who registered a domain with the word "Comcast" in it. They're protecting their trademark. Anybody registering a domain such as this, regardless of content, would receive a similar letter.

The author is clearly trying to manufacture a controversy to promote their political beliefs.

WIPO findings and several court cases have clearly sided with defendants for these types of sites.
