Shout out to Mr. Dybvig who taught our intro to CS course at IU Bloomington 20+ years ago! It was my first intro to recursion (of course the class was all scheme based) and gave me much more confidence in software development coming from a self taught background.

I took his Compilers class about 30 years ago. I really wish I still had those notes.

Threaten people with a 49% national sales tax, and suddenly they celebrate when it's only 10%.

There's a shocker.

Why would anyone fly to a country that's proud of shackling them and keeping them in detention without notifying their families? With the added bonus that next week they might be rendered to a slave gulag in El Salvador?

Vivtek commented on ARPA is funding cheap community-owned gigabit fiber to neglected neighborhoods   techdirt.com/2025/02/24/a... · Posted by u/hn_acker

I think they might be rolling out here in rural Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, which to be absolutely honest I would not have expected in a million years.

Certainly a guy came by this week measuring for, he said, laying fiber optic cable. Just to put this into perspective, our barrio is the least populous in Adjuntas, which is the least populous municipio on the island. For my own perception, as a displaced rural Hoosier, it's still really densely populated, which means it's probably a reasonable cable investment, all else equal, but still. Astonishing to see it.

History in a nutshell: did consulting in the 80's, independent online database consulting in the 90's, lost my shirt in the early 00's and switched to technical translation and am doing fine, thanks. Lately exploring agricultural robotics in Puerto Rico, which is about as blue-sky a venture as it is possible to imagine, but the weather agrees with me.

[Note in 2018: I guess some of the weather was less agreeable. I'm currently putting a roof back on the house. ¡Puerto Rico se levanta!]
