> Sometimes companies have even been destroyed, notably by Amazon, for having the wrong political viewpoints.

Ok, I'll ask: what company did Amazon destroy for having the wrong political viewpoint?

AWS hosts some pretty vile stuff without blinking. The last time a company made a big "woe is me, my ideas are being suppressed" claim against Amazon, it was Parler, and they weren't kicked off for their viewpoints. They were kicked off for operating a crime-ridden site with zero effective moderation.

TwiztidK · a year ago
Not too long after Parler was kicked off AWS, I was on a call with hundreds of representatives from power utilities about a modeling tool we were transitioning to. It was mentioned that the tool was hosted on AWS and someone suggested they have a fallback plan in case they got kicked off like "other companies".

you'll have trouble simulating the grid, but for energy data you might want to look at (or get in touch with) these people: https://app.electricitymaps.com/map

They're a cool little team based in Copenhagen. Would be useful, for example, to look at the correlation between your weather data and regional energy production (solar and wind). Next level would be models to predict national hydro storage, but that is a lot more complex.

My advice is to drop the grid itself to the bottom of the list, and I say this as someone who worked at a national grid operator as the primary grid analyst. You'll never get access to sufficient data, and your model will never be correct. You're better off starting from a national 'adequacy' level and working your way down based on information made available via market operators.

Actually, it seems like a great time to get involved with the grid (at least in the US). In order to comply with FERC Order 881, all transmission operators need to adjust their line ratings based on ambient temperatures with hourly predictions 10 days into the future by mid 2025. Seems like that would present a great opportunity to work directly with the ISOs (which have regional models and live data) on improving weather data.

Most(more or less all of them) grid operators can operate their network remotely from a single control room.

I suspect most grids are extremely easy to hack(never tried, don't bite the hand that feed you etc).

Info sec is just a hobby of mine. I install high voltage switch gear for a living.

> I suspect most grids are extremely easy to hack

I’d expect the opposite. All companies controlling equipment that is part of the “Bulk Electric System” have to be NERC CIP compliant and are audited regularly with large fines for non-compliance. Doesn't guarantee perfect (or even good security) but it’s more likely to be a priority.

This is a silly game. At MIT, 29.1% of students are international. [1]

Same link confirms that only 11% of undergrads are international students.

The era of Twitter/X status pages needs to come to an end given how unusable it is if you aren't logged in.

What’s your recommended hot sauce for eggs?
TwiztidK · a year ago
Cantina Royale’s Tomasa hot sauce (more of a chili oil) is my favorite for eggs or potatoes. It has a nice smoky chili flavor and decent heat level.

The runner up (and my favorite sauce for beans and rice) is The Brinery’s Aura Solanales. It’s like a fresher, more vibrant version of Franks/Crystal.

I'm really curious how this would've looked if he'd taken a mid-range budget approach to vision instead of being able to throw (tens of?) thousands of dollars of industrial motion capture cameras at it. Something like 2-4 global shutter cameras, all running a similar vision filter to what he first demo'd, feeding a kalman filter/state estimator to determine the ball's position. I can't blame hime for following the mantra of "don't build what you can buy (or get from a sponsor)" but it would be cool to see some affordable solutions (or attempted solutions) to this problem.

https://www.gridwatch.templar.co.uk/

It hasn't had a format change for at least as long as I've used it (since 2009). The gauges both reflect the industrial nature of the data as well as show the portion of the capacity being used.

The trend charts are great too, telling the story of the short, medium and long term generation sources.

Similar website for those in the US:

https://www.gridstatus.io/home

Shows fuel mix, load, and price data for all of the ISOs. It's been really exciting to watch lately because you can see the huge uptick in solar and battery deployments in markets like CAISO and ERCOT.

The killer function for me would be a private shared folder so new pictures would automatically go to the grandparents. If the Aura software does that, I might have to replace the ones they have currently.
TwiztidK · 2 years ago
I have a Google Photos album (shared with a few close family members) that automatically adds photos of my daughter and syncs them with the Aura frames her grandparents have. We've had this setup for the last two years and it works really well. I think it's literally the use-case Aura is targeting.

All that design and fabrication work, and the pedals swing the wrong way? And has no rigid frame connection to a seat?

If you're going to bother, then one of the biggest things is to rigidly attach the pedals to the seat so that they cannot move in relation to the seat even against the full power of legs.

And of course car pedals swing on a pivot that is above the pedals not below, although the gas pedal has an extra linkage so that IT does pivot on the bottom.

Clutch and brake (not break) require full leg power and knee bend, only gas is purely ankle bend, calf power.

And if such details don't matter, then you're right back to the off the shelf one.

TwiztidK · 2 years ago
You're dead on about rigid mounts for the pedals. One of the first issues many sim racers run into with regular cheap pedals and a desk mounted wheel is that they pedals slide once you start braking hard. And with load cell pedals the expectation is that you'll be using even more force, so that problem will just get worse.

As for pedal mounting location, many pedals can be top or bottom mounted if your racing chassis allows for it. However, floor mounted pedals offer the same performance as top mounted, match the majority of purpose built racing cars, and are simpler to mount in a sim racing chassis.
