> Microsoft doing shady stuff again.

Seems anything but shady? On the start menu in full sight and just explicitly suggesting their browser over Firefox. Doesn't even claim anything about either browser, just suggests theirs! Seems as honest and upfront as any advertising could be? 'Try our band of coffee' effectively.

It's advertising. Smack bang in the middle of the OS you paid hundreds for.

One of the many reasons why I hate Windows 10. Just get out of my way and let me use my computer how I want.

I'd put on my "smug Linux user" hat but to be honest my distro of choice (Ubuntu) has Amazon search integrated by default. The only saving grace is that it can be easily, completely, and permanently removed with just a couple of commands.

Seriously considering a Macbook for my next computer at this point.

There’s actually laws regarding stuff sent to you in error. Basically, they can’t ask you to return it unless you offer. Hence why there’s probably no formalized process for it.

This comment seems to be the mail order equivalent of the "they can't legally make you stay after the bell rings in class" kid at school.

Optical media these days has a horribly intrusive DRM system, which prevents you from watching the content on most of PCs (see AACS 2.0 on Blu-Ray drives). Ripping them is pretty much impossible unless you do some very DMCA illegal firmware patching... and even that doesn't always work.
SmellyGeekBoy · 6 years ago
It's mind boggling that they continue to make life so difficult for paying customers when it's possible to go to a site like Pirate Bay and get a bit-perfect rip in less than 15 minutes without Hollywood making a single penny.

Just let me buy DRM-free movies and download them to my NAS - and without all the tracking bullshit!

any reason for choosing ubuntu over arch for personal computers? Or any rolling release distro for that matter
SmellyGeekBoy · 6 years ago
Ubuntu takes all of about 10 minutes to install a full blown desktop and Just Works™ based on my recent experience. Not to take anything away from the amazing tweakability and customizability of Arch, but the target audience is completely different.

I bought a DEC MicroVAX on ebay a few years ago and the seller lived in Swindon. I passed through the Magic Roundabout on the way there and the way back (during rush hour). Having never encountered anything like it before it was... Well, I'd love to tell you a horror story, but to be honest it was all very logical and flowed very well.

That's what happens when MBAs and not engineers run your tech company
SmellyGeekBoy · 6 years ago
To be fair this exact behaviour has been happening since pretty much day 1, Google no longer being run by engineers is a very recent development.

Then use a generic email client instead of Gmail mobile app or web email interface.
SmellyGeekBoy · 6 years ago
The Fastmail app is very good, for example.

It's all the more infuriating when you consider how Windows 10 throws a hissy fit if you should dare to change your default browser from Edge to something else.

Not just the constant notifications but it even shows messages on the lock screen!

That's despicable.

I bought a Harmony Hub a while ago to turn my projector on and off (and set my stereo to the right input) with Amazon Alexa. The UI and setup process are really terrible. Can anyone recommend a good alternative?

(I actually intended it just as a stopgap until I hack my own IoT IR blaster, but haven't gotten around to it)

SmellyGeekBoy · 6 years ago
Seems you have your answer right there. Time to get hacking!
