I know that one of the very hard problems with automating email is not landing in the spam folder.

I always had the impression that using services like Mailchimp make that much less likely than doing it DIY on top of a more commodity transport like SES. I.e. they stay on top of and evolve with best practices over time so you don't have to.

Is that in any way accurate?

The problem is that you actually are spamming. Almost no one wants the junk that comes out of mailchimp. It’s just they are big and powerful enough to get their spam in inboxes rather than the spam box where it belongs.

This doesn't sound like a good deal for the average business with zero experiencing managing their mail. One spam block and you're done, you'll spend at least a week dealing with that.

Honestly everyone could spam block mailchimp and their email experience would improve.

An engineer should recognize what is worth their time. If setting this up takes more than 5hour a year of time to setup and maintain then it’s not worth it. You’ll be wasting money
PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
Depends who is paying. If it’s your own project then 5 hours of your own time might not be worth that much. If someone else is paying you then both options cost money and the equation changes.

> To send 4k emails a month a 1€/month VPS running Exim is enough and takes 1h to set up.

You can use a VPS for web projects. For e-mail you'd want a dedicated server with a separate IP that is going to cost you €40/month. Yes it may take 1h to set up, but gaining reputation takes time - you definitely won't be able to reach all recipients within one hour of purchasing the server.

No VPS has a shared IP address. The real problem is that the pool may have been dirtied by previous customers. But once you get a clean IP you can keep it for as long as you keep the service running.

I sent emails from a VPS for years without issues. I stopped purely because Fastmail had better software and cheaper storage.

Safari on mobile unfortunately still doesn’t seem to support .webm playback as of today.

Linux distros by default don’t support mp4. I’d say those are more common GitHub users.

ctrl-f of 'lfs' yielded no results, are those files gonna clutter git repos?
PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
GitHub issues are not stored in git. This is just video attachments in the text of issues.

Sorry, to clarify, all of my devices are Apple so I expect .mov with H264/H265 encoding. I’m wondering if other devices encode to webm without conversion now, and it’s a format people expect to be able to exchange by default.
PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
Webm and webp have become pretty standard usage on the internet now. Imgur, reddit and many other major sites use it by default when support is detected. Usually when I save an image in the browser it will be webp.

Honest question because I might be behind on how common environments behave: is webm the format your OS/device/workflow produces by default or one you convert to for sharing/optimization?
PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
Webm is one of the formats my screen recorder supports and seems to be the one my coworkers use. It’s pretty convenient since it works without having to install proprietary codecs and it even works on safari now.

Why use "blacklisted" here? Why not just say not allowed...
PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
Blacklisted is the specific terminology for when a website rejects certain file types. I guess in githubs case it would be that webm is not whitelisted since only 2 formats are permitted.

Could be Zoom messing up their logs, but could also be NAT from the provider.

A few years ago, me and my sister noticed we had the same IPv4 address, despite not living in the same household. We had different IPv6, though. It seems to be becoming more and more prevalent due to IPv4 exhaustion.

PurpleFoxy · 5 years ago
This is possible. Many users can be sharing the same IPv4 using CG-NAT. I have found that when using mobile internet, every site that uses IP bans has already banned me for a previous users actions.

It’s incredibly irresponsible to take action against someone based on their IP address alone.
