It all started with Evel K. in the 70s I think. We'd see him on Wide World of Sports, get his cycle jumping toy as presents, etc. Everyone started building wooden ramps to emulate Evel. It was actually a lot of fun so long as you didn't add too much speed or ramp height.

I'd say it most certainly killed the sort of dedicated small print classified ad publications you'd find at store checkout counters. But maybe those small pubs like The Want Advertiser (in Boston) were few and far between.

I think what made Saturday mornings so special was that you were in school for 5 days right before it.

For a kid, 5 days is a long time. For a 5 year old kid, a 5 day school week is the equivalent of a 30 year old working for 30 days straight, then imagine you have a 12 day vacation. That's how time felt, and why those first few hours of Saturday morning were so cherished, it signaled the beginning of a weekend of possibilities.

Yes. It was the only time and place to see cartoons as a kid then. Missed Saturday AM TV? Gotta wait until next Saturday AM. As for ad effectiveness, wow, every single kid in your class saw that new HotWheels car advertised.

So why don't we see Republican Americans advocating to adopt the Swiss system which provides universal coverage at a lower per capita cost?
MontgomeryPy · 23 days ago
In speaking with my republican father in law on his opposition to universal healthcare, it dawned on me that he views it as a sort of zero sum game. If he has healthcare today, and then universal healthcare offers it to folks that don't have it today, it is a loss for him.

The best cars were built between 2000 and 2010. Pretty much the pinnacle of the internal combustion engine without all the millions of lines of buggy code that apparently no longer allow you to open your car freely.

Yes (and tip of the hat to my fellow 00s Saab owners!)

If I were to interpret what Gabe is saying here, it would probably be something like:

Developers who start out learning to operate at the new higher level abstraction will be operating closer to the user value than those ingrained in the lower level of abstraction, and this is probably inherently true. If you’re a sysadmin insisting on hand editing config files, you may know a lot more about Linux, but a devops engineer with sensible will run circles around you.

Yes I think so. People who have <other skill> can now more easily add basic coding to their skillset using AI tools. Perhaps AI gives the developer other skills too but maybe less of a force multiplier given their role.

Gabe Newell thinks AI tools will result in a 'funny situation' where people who don't know how to program become 'more effective developers of value' than those who've been at it for a decade
MontgomeryPy commented on Ask HN: How to Make Friendster Great?    · Posted by u/ca98am79

Use it to promote making friends in person. Perhaps a curated and editable list of actual 3rd spaces in the real world. All anonymous users (like HN), popular 3rd spaces can be voted up/down per city/town. Maybe each venue could include posts for meet times or events.
