Li-ion batteries are older than you think. First volume production of NMC cells happened 1991. LFP in 1997. Google was founded 1998.

No one made fortune in Li-ion recycling in all those years. Li-ion cells remained disposable.

The volume of batteries wasn't there, neither did we really have the network to sell scrap batteries like we do with used cars.

The basic premise of nuclear safety is mutually assured destruction. If Russia believes that another superpower believes that Russia might be less capable of MAD due to losing a huge chunk of one leg of the nuclear trifecta they might be more likely to act premptively in launching a nuclear exchange.

Also, The Russian government relies on projection of an image of strength not just externally, but internally as well. If the Russian government is seen as weak internally they might be more likely to take drastic actions to stay in power.

Put all these together, and it seems like the world might just be a bit more dangerous today than it was yesterday. Maybe that is the Ukrainian strategy - make Russia do something monstrous to a western power to force western action.

I still don't understand how Putin managed to convince so many people that a rule that exclusively works to his benefit is a good idea. Weak of mind.

Buffet reminded me a lot of Angela Merkel.

They stood clearly and simply for good moral judgment, fair systems and looked at the bigger picture to carry most people forward. They also based all their decision in facts, truth and science. They learn't their trades (economics & politics) over time and weren't afraid to adapt as times changed.

Their slow and steady presence did more for equality and fairness than many others. We will need to find these values again after the current times have played out.

The bigger picture of getting germany dependent on russian gas while screwing eu allies.

Facebook groups are like the new Internet forums. There’s tons of stuff that’s moved to Facebook groups like Fishing and Car forums. For a lot of content Facebook groups are much better than forums.

Marketplace seems to be the new Craigslist and much better IMHO.

Posting is probably dead or dying. I haven’t done it in a decade or so.

Facebook groups are very disjointed and the algo does a bad job and keeping the good bits floating to the top.

> That's the only environmental hope I've been able to hang onto. It's now cheaper in most places[1] for net new energy installations to NOT use fossil fuels. I knew environmentally conscious approaches could never survive being the morally correct yet more expensive option.

This is one of the best takes I've read about the fossil fuel versus clean energy dilemma. Maybe it's lucky for humanity that moving towards clean energy is becoming so cost effective, thanks to many past government initiatives (from all over the world) that added momentum, and the many green energy related businesses that are now in existence.

>lucky for humanity

perhaps the word lucky isn't the correct one, since lots of people worked hard to push for the initial government programs that kick-started the economies of scale. And Tesla for making viable EVs both a reality as well as desirable for a growing chunk of the population.

What model year? I'm guessing it's an older one?

My Hyundai is a 2021 and I have to turn on the steering assist every time which I find annoying. My guess is that you had an earlier model where the steering assist was more liability than asset.

It's understandable that earlier versions of this kind of thing wouldn't function as well, but it is very strange that they would have it on by default.

Not 100% sure which year since it wasn't mine I think around 2018 +-2y. It was good at following bright painted white lines and nothing else. I didn't mind the beeping and the vibration when I stepped on a line but it wanted to actively steer the wheel which was infuriating. I wouldn't mind it if it was just a suggestion.

Our non-Tesla has steering assist. In my 500 miles of driving before I found the buried setting that let me completely disable it, the active safety systems never made it more than 10-20 miles without attempting to actively steer the car left-of-center or into another vehicle, even when it was "turned off" via the steering wheel controls.

When it was turned on according to the dashboard UI, things were even worse. It'd disengage less than every ten miles. However, there wasn't an alarm when it disengaged, just a tiny gray blinking icon on the dash. A second or so after the blinking, it'd beep once and then pull crap like attempt a sharp left on an exit ramp that curved to the right.

I can't imagine this model kills fewer people per mile than Tesla FSD.

I think there should be a recall, but it should hit pretty much all manufacturers shipping stuff in this space.

Ive had similar experience with a Hyundai with steering assist. It would get confused by messed road lining all the time. Meanwhile it had no problem climbing a road curb that was unmarked. And it would try to constantly nudge the steering wheel meaning I had to put force into holding it in place all the time since it which was extra fatigue.

Oh and it was on by default, meaning I had to disable it every time I turned the car on.

I wonder how is it different than radiosurgery? Machines like Cyberknife, Gammaknife also treat brain tumours in non invasive way
HeadsUpHigh · a year ago
Radiosurgery has it's limits and also horrible side effects esp in CNS tumors. If the tumor can be accessed without damaging too much healthy tissue and it's a histological type that has clean borders you are probably better off cutting it out.
