His videos make me oddly happy

Came here to say as I was reading this I was thinking "They sure as hell better call out Steve1989MREInfo" and then I got so much joy seeing his photo in the middle of the article.
GongOfFour commented on NYU is top-ranked in loans that alumni and parents struggle to repay   wsj.com/articles/nyu-coll... · Posted by u/alex504

The biggest problem I have with the idea of student loan forgiveness is that it punishes people who worked hard and paid their loans back and rewards people who didn't. If we're going to do a massive wealth distribution and cancel student loans, we should first pay back the people who actually paid off their loans. If that sounds ridiculous to people, then so should forgiving the outstanding loans.
GongOfFour · 4 years ago
This is silly. What if you chose to go to a smaller school so you paid for college out of pocket? Should you get paid for the opportunity cost of not going to the expensive liberal arts school?

Forgiving debt isn't about you, it's about unburdening an entire generation of working people so they aren't forever under the thumb of financial institutions. Undoing federal guarantees is also about rightsizing academia, which has bloated itself on these ever growing loan numbers.

And how many more kilotons of fossil fuels would we need to burn per year to make up for the loss in hydroelectric power those dams give us?
GongOfFour · 4 years ago
There are 84,000 dams in the United States. More than one a day since we became a country. Most of them don't generate any meaningful electricity, but they do disrupt habitat for many native fish species.

I would like to see them all destroyed. We can find electricity elsewhere.

This would be incredibly frustrating to me as a car driver. I don’t think having shared roads for a vocal minority of bikers makes sense. It basically slows down everyone to bike speed, which I realize is the unspoken strategy of bike activists, and it is also why I am against supporting bike-friendly policies in their current form. It makes more sense to have cities build raised biking/walking lanes outside of the traffic (on pillars). Why aren’t cities exploring such strategies to accommodate those who like the fast point to point benefits of cars alongside those who are OK taking it slow or going out for a bike ride?

Don't live in a city then. I don't anymore and it's the best thing I've ever done. This kind of performative assertion of space doesn't exist outside highly dense urban areas.

People thought the Beatles' music was making women mentally ill.

It's the same record on repeat.

You aren't even engaging with the ideas in this thread. Do you think everything is hunky dory with the kids today?

Every single generation for all of time has said this.

Yeah and each successive generation since the introduction of mass media has become more deranged.

I gradually dropped out a few years ago. I worked my way up in tech, wearing many different hats, for about 20 years, to a three-page resume and being able to find a six-figure job at the drop of a hat.

But the trade-off was not getting enough sleep, and feeling like my life's energy was being directed to making the world worse, not better. My work amounted to improving the efficiency of profit-making of the business, and getting a small piece of it to keep. I worked in finance supporting applications to facilitate MBS. I worked in advertising agencies to facilitate the sales of harmful products like petroleum and sugar water. All in all, my conscience was not clean.

Then there was the stress of arbitrary deadlines. And the constant disappointment of shipping something written haphazardly and then retired after a couple of years, replaced by another pile of crap.

It was a great learning experience. I think of it as university, where you also do a whole bunch of useless and pointless busywork in order to learn the skills. But eventually, it was time to go and move on.

I live primarily fregan lifestyle now, meaning I avoid using money as much as possible, for both ethical and practical reasons. I am generally able to sleep as much as I want, meditate as much as I want, and refactor my code as much as I want. I am almost never in a rush, and I feel much calmer and happier.

GongOfFour commented on Record number of environmental activists murdered   bbc.co.uk/news/science-en... · Posted by u/VieEnCode
yunohn · 4 years ago
Despite this weird sub-thread, the article isn’t talking about “dangerosity”. They’re reporting on the increase in evil activities by anti-environmental mega corps, who are also murdering opposing activists.
GongOfFour · 4 years ago
The article isn't original reporting at all, it is basically a press release for a report generated by an NGO. It's fine to question the source material here.

As opposed to embarrassing for detaining alleged "terrorists" without accusations for a decade? You do know the entire world knows about it right? It's never been a good look for the greedy warmongers that are the American people.

Ah the old Canadian pastime of sitting back and launch invectives at America while coasting on the economic and national security she provides by just being in proximity to her.
