Yeah the top 100 is super weird, it’s all these commercial EDM DJs but the weird thing is the magazine doesn’t otherwise really seem to target that audience. I don’t read it but I have come across some good long form pieces like this from them online, so actually I think they are trying to do some good stuff.
DevoidSimo · 2 years ago
I'd imagine that it's because the DJs ask people to vote for them. A lot of the DJs I follow do that every year. If the big commercial DJs with the biggest following do that, then they would naturally land at the top.

I don't understand what's going on in Google's mobile division. Android 12 is filled with bugs that aren't fixed months after release. The Pixel 6 came with a terrible fingerprint scanner. They released a completely botched update for the Pixel 6 that broke basic cellular connectivity, and it took more than a month for a fix. Feels like this part of the business isn't a priority for them anymore.

I have a pixel 6 pro, the assistant immediately crashes if I try to use it. Has been like that for months. One would think google would prioritise that feature for bug fixes.

Started on an older monitor, moved it to my newer one and found it easier. Was able to score a 0.

Too many variables to be taking this test on non-controlled equipment

Also a tip, if you're taking this at night time and use flux/night light, turn that off before you start.

Also because no one works this way. The coding challenges are contrived and don't really reflect typical work. Like I've never had to do anything like strings that occur more than k times.

And these clarifications are mostly dumb. If you pass an emoji into my string function I'm okay with it not working. Similarly if you pass in a negative number then that's your own dumb fault if it does something unexpected.

That's how the real world works. You go to the extent that covers 99.99% of cases. If that means it doesn't work in your crazy scenario, well, create a ticket and it'll sit in the backlog until we clean up old tickets.

DevoidSimo · 4 years ago
Asking clarifying questions is a pretty key part of software development. You get a loose requirement the system must do X, you then need to drill into all the details. For this reason I think lots of these coding problems are deliberately under-specified.

They don't give out free heroin in SF. There are needle exchange programs, and a small number of safe usage sites. Also, you're assuming most of the addicts are heroin addicts. Quite a few of them are meth addicts, who are harder to reach, partially because the type of meth they're getting causes severe psychosis.

Giving meth addicts forms of meth that are produced more cleanly would reduce the level of psychosis and would further reduce the price of meth to a point where it may not be profitable to produce (it's already cheap to the point where it's nearly unprofitable - it requires massive volume).

Giving addicts access to clean drugs provides you an opportunity to help them, a place to keep them away from others while they're using, a way to ensure they don't die while using, reduces funding to organized crime, and removes their need to commit crimes to fund their habits.

You may see it as treating them poorly, but ultimately, you're doing them and the rest of society a benefit.

Is it impurities in meth that give you psychosis? I was of the impression that often it was due to sleep deprivation due to being on meth and not sleeping for days.

All headphones and earphones I’ve tried will cut off everything else while they are being charged. Including Bose and Apple.

Yes, this is a PITA. If you know of a maker of headphones and earphones that doesn’t do this, please let me know.

Adding another one, my Sennheiser PXC 550 (both original and II) will charge and do bluetooth or wired audio.

Do you have the facebook container extension? That closes the current tab, opens a new tab with a container, then goes to the facebook link. Reopening the last closed tab works for me, although I haven't noticed this before since I always open links in a new tab.

First of all this "simple" car may end up being more expensive. Doing a lot of the things the old mechanical way requires a lot of labor and labor is expensive nowadays. Having to use turning wires and vacuum tubes for instrument clusters, and a bunch of pull wires for controls... Not only would that be expensive it would require skills and equipment long lost today. Oh and the wind shield wipers -- it is possible to power wind shield wipers mechanically but those were some very complex rube goldberg type mechanisms.

Furthermore, this "simple" car will not last very long. People have forgotten that nowadays, but in the old times of "simple" mechanical cars, cars used to break down much more often and require much more skilled maintenance.

Most people would not know how to use it. Do you think people will be able to handle an unassisted wheel? You know, actually use their muscles to turn the wheel when parking? How about unassisted brakes? You get into a dangerous situation, you slam on the brakes and then it turns out that you have to use your muscles to actually apply sufficient force. How about even getting into the car without a radio key fob. I very much doubt the majority of people will even know how to lock or unlock their rear doors without a central lock/unlock key. They will probably just leave their car unlocked.

But most importantly, it wouldn't sell. Cars nowadays sell based on electronic features. You can see that from the commercials. Even fairly advanced features like navigation and parking sensors are considered a must have now.

I've driven my car with only enough battery to really power the spark plugs and instruments in the dash (alternator failed and I got jump started). It was manageable even with the heavy steering, although to be fair I was driving max 50kph. Perhaps braking at highway speeds would be challenging.

I also much prefer my phone navigation over the in car system (Android Auto/Apple Carplay would solve this). That said, I wouldn't buy the car GP is suggesting, but I could imagine that if you were price sensitive then you might.

No comment around the older systems, I don't really have the knowledge to agree or disagree there.

Couldn't agree more.

I have to use JIRA at work, and it's absolutely awful. Every action takes up to a couple seconds to execute, many tasks have no way to be automated or done in batches, and some seemingly simple actions require jumping through several unintuitive menus to complete.

To me it's clear that the people making this software almost certainly can't be the ones using it, and the people generally choosing and paying for it probably are also not the ones using it heavily day to day. Otherwise there's no way this level of performance would be tolerated.

DevoidSimo · 4 years ago
One of my friends works at Atlassian (not on JIRA). Apparently they do use JIRA there. Presumably things which are not performance are prioritised higher.

> The only way there should be a legal hold on a phone like that, is if it is her work phone, which she shouldn't be having nude pics of herself on in the first place.

some people use their personal phone for work email, etc. and miss the fact that that makes the phone basically a company property - i.e. the company can wipe it remotely, etc.

Wrt. Apple requiring to not wipe out laptop before returning it i wonder how do they enforce it. In more than 2 decades i have never returned laptop without wiping it and wonder what can change that, if any.

DevoidSimo · 4 years ago
At least on android (maybe not used at apple?) there are work profiles. You install all the work stuff there, and that partition can be remotely wiped. All of your personal stuff is kept segregated. It's also nice that you can turn off the work profile during weekends and holidays so that you don't get work notifications.
