Well, crap. Any migration path or alternatives? I don't even need 99% of Astrid's bells and whistles, just your basic "add entries and tick 'em off" todo list along the lines of what the Palm V used to do.

I'm a recent convert to Remember the Milk[0], can't recommend it enough (the apparent stable business model is a plus as well, I recall using them back in the Blackberry era)

Clojurescript clientside. Noir serverside. http://www.chris-granger.com/projects/noir/https://github.com/clojure/clojurescript

you could also use clojurescript serverside using node.js. this is what LightTable does iirc http://www.chris-granger.com/lighttable/

How mature is ClojureScript these days? I remember people saying it and Clojure on Android was rough when I was exploring Clojure a while back. Does the compiler eliminate unused code from the final output?
ConstantineXVI · 12 years ago
I'm led to believe the issues with Clojure (and other JVM languages) on Android are due to Dalvik not being as friendly to other languages as the Sun JVM. I don't blame Google, but it's unfortunate.

Funny, if Apple trawled through your email, calendar and search history to pull a stunt like this people would be up in arms.

Guess whether a walled garden is a bad thing depends on your particular brand of fanboyishness.

Personally speaking, the idea of Google displaying things based on my email history, diary and a knowledge of my location makes me shudder, "You're near that motel where you had that quickie last month, want to make a reservation?".

It's never been a secret that Google crawls your data, and it's not hard to find people up in arms about it.

And personally, I'm fine with Google doing so when they're actually doing something for my benefit with it (like Now).

Why Mac, Windows and Chromebook, but not Linux? There must be some proprietary code? I bet it won't run on an unlocked Chromebook either.

I seem to remember hearing this is based on Quickoffice (which Google acquired)

MSFT's web version of office (office.live.com) actually handles Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote in web browsers without any plugins. I am not sure why Google had to write this.
ConstantineXVI · 12 years ago
Office Web actually handles the files server-side, as does Google's own Docs/Drive. This is a purely client-side extension.

I have computers in datacenters that I can effortlessly SSH into when I am feeling the (frequent and chronic) urge to Dick About With Computers And/Or Software.

However, the one that connects to my display(s) is simply a tool for running Chrome, Skype, FaceTime, Mail.app, TweetDeck, Spotify, and SSH, and, as such, should not ever break or otherwise hinder the incredibly simple tasks which ARE ITS ONLY JOB.

This is why the only computers I own that I touch on a regular basis all have fruit on the back. It's a very simple calculus.

The same reasons [0] are why I have a Chromebook. CrOS is limited, sure, but the limits make the thing bloody near invincible (and amazingly productive).

[0] Hangouts are luckily the VoIP of choice for most I work with

It gets suspicious if you write this and you don't have an iPhone ;)

I just append ☎ to my signature.

(I know it's a rotary phone. But it existed pre-emoji so renders most anywhere, where U+1F4F1 [📱] doesn't.)

A note: if you're on VZW, their (sadly hideous) Messenger app replicates Voice's cross-device SMS(/MMS!) on your VZ number.
