CincinnatiMan commented on US Intel   stratechery.com/2025/u-s-... · Posted by u/maguay

I believe something similar is happening in drug development right now. It may take less than 5, 10, 15 years to see the impact to the US. But from someone who has a vantage point to see it across many parts of the industry, including having seen the evolution of Intel / TSMC, I think it is a very similar story. Right now is like 2007 (or maybe even a bit later) for therapeutics. In the future, we will look back on this year as the year we gave it up.

It could be argued that new drug development is less needed during wartime than processor manufacturing.

That’s a great way to screw over every industry that isn’t tech.

Hospitals and labs can’t afford to match tech spending to obtain H1Bs.

If there’s going to be an auction then there needs to be an industry or job code cap too.

Are there ways these other industries could increase interest from citizen workers, in the scenario that they can’t obtain H1Bs?

Philips' Eye Comfort series virtually have no flicker. I personally only use these series. They come in CRI>80 and CRI>90 variants. Latter one is also dimmable and comes with soft on/off.

They are nice.

Soraa brand bulbs are a tier above Philips if anyone is interested in premium lighting.

Is the implication that this worker is forced to work due to poor living conditions, rather than choosing to work to avoid retirement boredom or loneliness?

I bought my house in 2018 for $40k and it's paid off. I used to move frequently (every 5 years or so), but now I'm kind of trapped because housing has gotten so bonkers since then. Instead I'm throwing all my extra money into retirement so I can be done @ 55.

Did your house not also increase in value along with every other house?

I’m not sure how I feel about a government incentivizing daycare. I’d rather all parents receive financial support, regardless of their childcare decisions.

This is a hilarious concept and would probably genuinely help. Nicely done!

I used to have a similar issue with hiding inside all the time (during Covid times, of course) and to motivate myself to go outside, I started an Instagram of tiny little plants growing in cracks in the pavement. I tried to add a new tiny plant every day or two, which meant that I had to wander further and further afield to find a suitable specimen. It wasn't perfect, but was quite motivating.

I love the irony here. Going outside into “real life” to find pictures to post on a site that keeps people inside.
CincinnatiMan commented on Undiagnosed Cognitive Decline Eats into Seniors' Retirement Savings   wsj.com/personal-finance/... · Posted by u/petethomas

i strongly oppose the American approach to pensions, which is regrettably spreading worldwide.

relying on private savings to finance retirement is highly risky, and this is the crux of the article in question.

pension systems should be administered through public programs, not turned into moralistic contests in which individuals are penalized if their investments fail for any reason (and it's only their fault... while it's clear it's a social failure).

basic solidarity is essential in ensuring both the health of retirees and the fulfillment of reasonable expectations for a secure retirement.

With a pension system, if I die shortly after retiring, my heirs and I get nothing. Whereas if I save for my own retirement with a 401k, my heirs would get that money.

I'm not on Twitter but in its current form, wouldn't a blocked user be able to see the blocker's posts just by using an incognito window or logging in as a different account?
