BoxedEmpathy commented on Japan's gamble to turn island of Hokkaido into global chip hub   bbc.com/news/articles/c86... · Posted by u/1659447091

For those unfamiliar with the history, Taiwan’s (ROC) own constitution says it is part of China. Its dispute is with the CCP, not China itself.

Conflating the PRC vs ROC conflict with a China vs Japan conflict is just ignorant.

"Once China solves the Taiwan problem"? Then I suppose Japan has nothing to worry about.

Traditional threat to Hokkaido is Soviet tank battalions, not Chinese. It's roughly due east to Vladivostok and to south of Sakhalin island. Unless Russian Federation actually falls and these regions change hands into hostile entities, it should be okay. And there will be more important things to worry than continuing economical chip production if that happens.

Is that not a threat?

Fantastic news! I hope to live long enough to see LEO become more accessible to everybody.

Until some ML process is learned to give a probability that accounts are the same based on writing styles

Staying anonymous is very difficult

I specifically write with different perspectives, tones, and opinions on different sites in a probably vain attempt to mitigate this.

For example, on YouTube I use twitch slang, and on Reddit I use TikTok slang, and on TikTok I use reddit slang. On hackernews a use a slightly whimsical pedantically-infused undergrad tone.

If the world was flat imagine the 5 star hotel on the edge. It would be awesome.

Gotta learn to filter the news on various ways. Climate change? You gonna make the earth temp decrease? Then stop worrying. Microplastics? Just drink more from glass and less junk which come from plastic containers. Lots of violence on the news? It’s been like that ever since man has evolved from cells. Stop worrying

For me, none of that stuff bothers me. What gives me the social media heartbreak is seeing the hate. Seeing commenters get so upset with each other over misunderstandings and miscommunications.

I've tried completely avoiding comments, and I admit it makes my life less stressful, but it feels like closing your eyes to solve littering.

So now what I do is try to assume every positive commenter is a human and every negative commenter is maybe a LLM/hatebot. This has given me just enough magical thinking to avoid the stress but not so much as to distort my world view... hopefully..

It is very unusual for AWS not to issue refunds in situations like this, so I don't think it's a function of them finding an edge to milk thousands from user mistakes. More likely they've found that issuing refunds is less onerous than it would be to provide accurate and cheap tutorials.

Perhaps that does not excuse the behaviour but AWS reversed a $600 charge I incurred using AWS Textract where the charges were completely legitimate and I was working for a billion dollar enterprise.

I very recently had a run away SageMaker issue that wasn't refunded. Wasn't much, only $50, but they said no.
