I’m also in the camp of paying government officials more. In my town, the mayor and council make about $30k each while the median income in the city is well over $100k and houses cost over $1M. That self-selects out the majority of qualified candidates who must work for a living.

We have several high tech companies as well as a pro sports team that perpetually influence politics to the city’s detriment, and the stooges that get put on our ballot each election are simply under-equipped to combat them.

125k people, $9,000 for the city council position in my area.

I find it hard to believe that charging people is the only way to stop people people from making multiple/spam accounts. It seems like it's just the easiest and most profitable. And, if it is the only option, then why does an account that has been paying Apple $90 a year for a decade still need to keep paying them: it's seems unlikely to be a spam account at that point.

This is like the "why do i have to pay property taxes after i pay my house off?" for Apple™

I have to agree. Number of times it’s prevented me from running software I wanted to run: zero. Number of times it’s stopped me and said the equivalent of “are you really sure?”: a handful, maybe once a year on average.

And it’s not like I don’t use a gazillion third party apps and commands.

running VMs on apple chips has been rather difficult for me. other than that, yeah.

I've been trying to build a golf side hobby business making putters on antique machinery in my garage. Have grown to get some pretty steady traction on instagram, have realized I am not a businessman in all of this, so a lot of learning.

It's a "(CSS-only Terrain) Generator", not a "CSS-only (Terrain Generator)"

Doesn't a dearth mean a lack of?
91bananas · 2 months ago
Probably. I guess I meant a shit ton, but written in a series of confusing "choose your own adventure" style bursts of 40 new browser tabs to figure anything out.

And it doesn't occur to them that they will need money when they're old and can't work? Incredible.

This has to be satire at this point.

Oh dear lord, GCP could be the intuitive one?! I have not used anything else but, dear lord, that's shocking and not at all surprising at the same time.
91bananas · 2 months ago
Yeah this is not the case at all lol. I actually find Azure to be far more intuitive after suffering through AWS and a little GCP. It certainly seems more stable in US regions than AWS.

One thing I will say is the Azure documentation is some of the most cumbersome to navigate I've ever experienced, there is a dearth of information in there, you just have to know how to find it.

Jesus, we've gone from Eliza and Bayes Spam Filters to being able to hold an "intelligent" conversation with a bot that can write code like: "make me a sandwich" => "ok, making sandwich.py, adding test, keeping track of a todo list, validating tests, etc..."

We might not _quite_ be at the era of "I'm sorry I can't let you do that Dave...", but on the spectrum, and from the perspective of a lay-person, we're waaaaay closer than we've ever been?

I'd counsel you to self-check what goalposts you might have moved in the past few years...

91bananas · 2 months ago
I'd counsel you to work with LLMs daily and agree that we're no where close to LLMs that work properly consistently outside of toy use cases, where examples can be scraped from the internet. If we can agree on that we can agree that General Intelligence is not the same thing as a, sometimes, seemingly random guess at the next word...
