4oo4 commented on iOS 26.2 to allow third-party app stores in Japan ahead of regulatory deadline   macrumors.com/2025/11/05/... · Posted by u/tosh

Pardon me if this is a basic question but surprised I couldn't find more details regarding it.

What prevents an end user to either buy a japanese vpn and use that to connect to the app store.

I doubt that a vpn running itself inside an ios phone itself would work out of the box but what about if its running at a router level or lets say I use a vpn on another phone and use it to create a hotspot to connect to in an ios phone.

Don't things like these basically allow these rules to effectively break the ios monopoly.

Or think about it this way, lets say I go to japan and install an third party app store and then go back to some other country, would the 3rd party app store still work?

I am also wondering about what mechanism can be used which can make a third party store work in the first place, I know of IOS jailbreaks so would it be similar to it, how would they detect that its in "japan"

Or would these work at a hardware level? That a phone sold in japan would have such features, if that would be the case, I would assume it would increase the values of such phones.

I would appreciate it if people could tell me more about what's the case and answer my questions.

Here are people documenting what they had to do for this, in both cases it necessitated the use of Faraday cages:

The developer of this project makes being a jerk to everyone who talks to him his personal mission. People asking for support are insulted on his forum... pretty routinely.

I use a fork of TTRSS daily, it's good software, but I strongly discourage anyone ever talk to upstream.

what's the fork that you use?

I haven't seen it mentioned in the release notes, but if I'm understanding correctly there's no separate rt kernel now because PREEMPT_RT got merged?

Why do you think ZFS helps? I’m guessing you have compression turned on? IME, ZFS is rarely better in terms of raw performance, compared to e.g. XFS.

From experience having an L2ARC SSD, especially if it's nvme, can really help with zfs performance. I'm curious if they have that in their setup.

I feel like they had to have read this and added that out of spite.

Selling exploits is generally legal. What law would be used to put you in jail? Using exploits can fall under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act's criminally prohibited conduct but afaik there is no similar law that covers distributing/selling exploits. In fact selling exploits to companies via their bug bounty programs is quite common.

All that said NSO didn't just distribute/sell the exploits (that would be giving away their secret sauce). Instead they offered what was essentially a managed service for executing the exploits against user selected targets.

Wouldn't hosting a service to facilitate others' use of the exploits fall under CFAA? Since there have been numerous arrests for those hosting Ransomware-as-a-service, DDOS-as-a-service, etc. Just curious whether there is a legal nuance that prevents them from being criminally charged instead of just politics/diplomacy.

I have a recent (2024) Gigabyte AMD motherboard and Windows 11 refuses to recognize the Ethernet NIC or onboard wifi. I can't load the drivers during setup either because they're .exe installers and it wants .inf files or something.

I got mad and installed Fedora Kinoite, which somehow just worked out of the box. My games all worked too.

I've been mulling over installing a Windows partition for the inevitable game with anti-cheat I'd like to play (Battlefield) but insanely hostile shit like this has made me reconsider.

Have you tried opening the .exe with 7-zip to see if there are .inf (and I believe .sys files that go with) that you can extract?

I wouldn't even blame it on the mods and higher ups. There are enough people here invested in Sam Altman either through YC or AI that mutually aligned interests alone will cause a story like this to get squashed, every time. No conspiracy needed.

And that doesn't even take into account the number of people who consider all discussions of this kind to be categorically off topic, and would flag it on principle regardless of the context.

If you do a search for the word rape, there are tons of discussions about it, so it's definitely not categorically off topic. I'm going to email hn@ycombinator.com per the FAQ since the way this keeps happening feels abusive and against the spirit of HN.

I was seeing this on the front page of HN mere moments ago and now it’s gone.

Unlike other stories critical of Sam Altman, it's very suspicious the way this is so quickly and systematically downvoted and flagged every single time it's posted.

This happened the last time this was posted too. Sam Altman deserves the right to defend himself in court as does Ann to tell her story (who personally I believe).

The good news is that with the lawsuit it will be in the news more and much harder to silence, maybe at some point we can have a proper discussion about it on HN without people (or more likely bots) trying to memoryhole it every single time.
