2trill2spill commented on Moving from OpenBSD to FreeBSD for firewalls   utcc.utoronto.ca/~cks/spa... · Posted by u/zdw

What's wrong with Linux for firewalls? Either openwrt, or any distro really.

Why would any BSD perform better?

(edit: genuinely curious why BSDs are such popular firewalls)

2trill2spill · 4 months ago
I assume in this case they already had a bunch of firewall rules for PF and switching from OpenBSD -> FreeBSD is a much easier lift then going to linux because both the BSDs are using PF, although IIRC there are some differences between both implementations.

A quieter world is one where the outdoors is quieter because we stop producing so much noise in the first place. This would benefit us and wildlife, which are very negatively impacted by not just our classic pollution but our noise and light pollution too.

Agreed, its one of the many reasons I cant wait for the shift from ICE vehicles to EVs, they are just so much quieter.

1000 aircraft for $1.7 trillion, so each plane costs $1.7 billion. That's nuts.
2trill2spill · 2 years ago
Umm each plane cost way less than 1.7 Billion. A F35A can be purchased for around $80 million. The 1.7 trillion figure is the cost of research & development, purchasing about 1700 aircraft, and sustaining them for 57 years. So that includes fuel, spare parts, upgrades, pilots, etc, for almost 60 years.

Not knowing much about these things, I wondered if 1,000 is a lot or a little. Wikipedia says that it is not very many [1]. But then again, we aren’t in the middle of a world war. Does anyone know what the final production number will be? As in, the vast majority that will ever be produced have already been ordered? Or is the future still wide open?

For a military, non WW2 plane, 1000 aircraft is a lot. The US government plans on buying around ~1700 F35 and US allies have orders for another ~1000 F35. Overtime I would expect the number of orders for f35 to keep going up.

Is there any progress on those Small Nuclear Reactors (SMR)? The promise was 3-5 year builds for one unit and allowing builds in parallel to deploy multiple units and hooking them up to form practical larger plants. But it seems it cooled a bit now? It would appear to be perfect for the EU situation and there would be a lot of money and interest I guess. It is just hard to find concrete and up to data information.

China has built a couple HTR SMR[1] and is also currently building a PWR SMR[2]. And in the United States, Nuscale is looking to have the UAMPS project starting to supply energy in 2029[3].

WTF, I live in Portland and the only supply chain issues I see are that WinCo is the only place I can get diet orange soda at.

What the heck are you talking about? I've seen heavy cream in literally every grocery store I've gone into. Supply chains for food are not screwed there.

Have you been to a Fred Myers recently? It's amazing how much stuff in the meat and dairy sections are not available anymore.

Public health officials should tread carefully otherwise they risk alienating large segments of the population. Which would inturn be bad for public health.

I love my 2017 Ford Focus RS! It has a touch screen but besides for that there's no lane assist, automatic breaking, or any other driver assists. I also love that it is a manual, however some people may not like that. Also they only made it from 2016 - 2018 and used ones are expensive. But check it out if you want a modern, fast, manual car with minimal digital none sense.

> That's why I don't really understand why there are still covid restrictions in countries that are close to full vaccination, like the UK

I cracked some ribs three weeks ago and coughing / sneezing are really painful. I am keeping my mask on because I really don't want even a mild cough, for whatever reason.

More generally, the vaccines are not 100% effective, the virus can still be transmitted and spread. For lots of people, getting COVID is still life threatening, even if the average case is not as bad as it used to be.

2trill2spill · 5 years ago
So you want country wide restrictions solely for your own comfort? Sounds incredibly selfish.
