I have HA running for years (in Docker) and it’s very reliable.

It has integrations with allmost all devices or apps I use and the support for DSMR (Smart Electrical Meters) is first class

I plugged a cable into my meter, the usb end into the server and it just works.

It does have a steep learning curve, though. It really seems “by IT people for IT people”

It used to have a steep learning curve, I’d say. Once I’ve had a long complicated manually written configuration of all my devices, integrations, automations etc, which gradually got replaced by simple clicking in the gui. On the other hand, this also meant a lot of breaking changes over the years, when I had to re-configure my staff the new way

Do a lot of people use Google Maps on iOS? I ask because the “feed fake data” option is something I could imagine Apple doing but never in a million years would I believe Google would do it.

Apple Maps wouldn’t have this issue. It’s capable of running offline (without a data connection) because it can download maps to the device.

a lot of people do, for example me. apple maps sucks badly where i live (eu). say, it has no idea my house (built 6 years ago) exists, it builds routes via non-existing roads, is not aware of road works, detours or most of the businesses around

apple maps is completely useless here, even though i don’t like using a google app, there’s no alternative

Not too long ago I found myself tired of how Plex on my server would periodically break itself and unhappy with how the company was continuing to pivot away from the core product, so I started looking into alternatives.

Jellyfin was the most promising option but unfortunately ended up being unviable for me, because my home server/NAS runs FreeBSD, and by virtue of C#/Mono being a pain to get running on FreeBSD so is Jellyfin. I could work around this with a Linux jail or moving the server over to Linux but I'd really rather not have to do either.

As an side it's a bit odd to me how all of the most complete media server packages heavily rely on either Python or C#, and also a bit frustrating because when they break it not infrequently has something to do with some quirk in either. Would really like to see a media server comparable to Plex written in something less prone to breakage.

Well, it was recently added to ports, JFYI

As late as 2020 I encountered a European shop that couldn't handle my Swedish address that had an å in it.

That is, it accepted the address on the website, but then it got screwed in the delivery.

I'm still in awe.

you'd be even more impressed to find out how often polish characters (ąęłćśżźńó) get totally screwed in... poland itself

i can. so you can too. the hardest part is finding a clean ip in a clean block. the rest is quite simple and straightforward. dkim+spf set up was enough for my opensmtpd to deliver my mail to all the big players without any going to spam

More like a BBS partyline. IRC requires a custom client, not just a terminal connection.
0ld · 3 years ago
i had been using telnet for irc in the 90s a lot, it doesn’t really require any custom client

To be clear, are you saying the 65km convoy is going to fail to take Kyiv?

I just don't understand how that could happen unless they literally run out of fuel on the way, or if some serious airforce intervenes.

0ld · 4 years ago
> they literally run out of fuel on the way

surprise (not), but they literally ran out of fuel on the way [0]

that 65km convoy is just a 65km sitting duck of a traffic jam at the moment. without fuel and food

all of this war is a festival of glorious russian corruption and incompetency at its best. i, as a ukrainian, must thank them for that

I want SO BADLY to convert my switches to smart switches, but it feels impossible to find what i need. Good luck searching on Amazon, too. Search for Zigbee, and it will return page after page of zwave, proprietary, and other listings. It's impossible to wade through. I've tried and given up multiple times.

This is what i need that is evidently so difficult to find: 1. Zigbee 2. 3-way 3. Dimmable 4. Beige (almond?) Color

Any ideas?

try searching zigbee2mqtt supported devices: https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/supported-devices/#s=switch
