This. I hope Canada sets the precedence. Once Facebook chances their business model, Canada can then reconsider letting back in. Set the example. Show other countries it's possible and hopefully they follow suit as well. That is, quite literally, how mass societal change works. Good luck!
It really begs the question: “who is Canada?”
If a govt minister makes a comment, did “Canada say it?” If the prime minister? The Canadian people? A lot of lazy headlines about this just use the “Canada” personified because of one minister’s comments.
Trudeau: Do as we say or you can't operate here
Meta: Ok we won't operate there
T: but you're providing an important service our citizens depend on. Do as we say and operate here
M: ?
T: Hey Yukoners, it's Meta's fault your not getting wildfire information
Why should Meta do anything for these clowns?
I for one don't want to live anywhere the state can dictate arbitrary terms to businesses, even the businesses I don't like.
It's bad enough that our democracy has so much centralized power that this legislation could get rammed through in the first place.
