I'm not your usual coder. I've been programming since the age of 10. I'm 52. I've also worked in forestry, farming, construction and I'm a trained blacksmith. Currently I'm programming CNC and converting vans into campers.
I released a game last year on Steam after a break from programming: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2116950/Tiny_Solar_System...
I made #1 spot on Hacker News last year for this silly site: https://weighoff.net/ (my favourite question: https://www.weighoff.net/?option1=William%20Shatner&option2=...)
I'm releasing a new game this month: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2434510/Gravity_Waves/ built in just over a month. #solodev. I did everything but the music. While also working in non-IT full-time. Follow https://twitter.com/marsupial_pouch for updates.
I'm curious if there's interesting dev work out there that I might be suited for.
Thanks for your time.

Like this Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact [https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=31518945], I am looking for similar work. I am a European software developer who has lived and worked on four continents. Now it's time to move on and so i am looking to relocate to Africa.
While i could find a job elsewhere i believe that the experience living in an area where my work is going to have an impact gives me a better understanding of the needs of the location i am serving. Whether it is through direct contact with clients and users or just by being part of a local community and learning about the reality of living there.
I have more than a decade of experience running a company, doing software development, support and training and mentoring adults and students, as well as working on educational projects, and i am willing to take on a mixture of roles as needed to support a project.
I am willing to consider a volunteer position if a visa can be arranged.

I’ve achieved 40x improved table storage size with Postgres, placed top 5 in compiler code size optimization contest at school, love lisp macros and have led an optimization effort where we achieved 50% reduction in p50 graphQL performance across the board.
Love to teach people about the benefits of clustered data in databases. Really want to try pg_repack, I figure this could reduce costs of many transactional DBs by 30% due to using less memory and compute for similar QPS and only mildly more storage needs.
Contract or fill time is ok

The code size optimization used the standard dead code elimination, constant propagation and folding, peephole ASM optimizations. I also found that the hidden test suite had a defect where some valid code could be eliminated and it’s associated tests wouldn’t catch it, but forget the details. I informed them but they let me keep the savings.
I know how to send compiler errors in Racket IDEs using a macro (static code checks). I also made a macro which reads DB table column names and creates variables based on them, so the code would break based on typo checking against the actual table name.
The graphQL optimization came from suspiciously high serialization costs in python Apollo graphQL server. Something like 70% of time handling request in serialization. Someone else figured out a change to help here, it took some prodding them to keep looking for the right fix as 70% time in serialization seemed absolutely nuts.

Blurp:
First and foremost, I am an accessibility consultant. Next to that, I am a developer. A screenreader-using, fully blind one in fact. Why, I was featured on HN for that very thing several years ago: <https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8965048>.
I do my best work when I can somehow combine those three things. This spans from working with dev teams as a regular old dev, or an accessibility-focused one, all the way to training people on accessibility, auditing pages and helping with remediation.
I was unfortunately laid off recently and am therefore once more on the prowl for a position that would be suitable. Technologies include Php/Laravel, Python/Django, Ruby/Rails, backend JS, UNIX, Docker, Git, etc.
Skills outside of those obviously include HTML, WCAG, 30 years of accessibility experience given I live that life, screen reader proficiency and public speaking/teaching.
